Milk and skim milk have a high glycemic index due to their lactose content
The glycemic index (GI) is a measure of how quickly a carbohydrate-containing food raises blood glucose levels. Foods with a high GI are rapidly digested and absorbed, causing a quick spike in blood sugar, while foods with a low GI are digested and absorbed more slowly, causing a more gradual rise in blood sugar.
Now, regarding milk, both regular milk and skim milk have a moderate to high glycemic index due to their lactose content, which is a type of carbohydrate. The glycemic index of milk can range from 27 to 45 for regular milk and 32 to 46 for skim milk, depending on the specific type and brand.
While some studies have suggested that consuming milk may help regulate blood sugar levels, others have suggested that high-glycemic foods, including milk, may contribute to the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
Therefore, it is recommended that if you have diabetes or you are trying to manage your blood sugar levels limit their intake of high-glycemic foods, including regular and skim milk, and choose lower-glycemic alternatives such as unsweetened almond milk or soy milk.
